Senate Calls For Risk Assessment Of School Infrastructure After Toddler’s Tragic Death

This resolution was reached after a comprehensive debate on a motion titled “Urgent Need to Mandate Schools to Place Creche and Nursery Classes on Ground Floors of High-Rise Buildings and Implement Safety Protocols.”
The motion, sponsored by Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule, representing Lagos West Senatorial District, expressed deep concerns about the tragic death of a toddler, David Etim Udo, on October 24, 2023.
at Emerald International School in Aba, Abia State. The toddler had fallen from a high-rise building within the school premises.
Senator Adebule highlighted the need to address safety in schools, especially for babies and toddlers attending Creches and Nursery schools throughout Nigeria, citing instances of accidents, including falls from multi-floor buildings in schools, resulting in injuries, temporary or permanent disabilities, and sometimes fatalities.
The Senate, after considering the contributions of other lawmakers, upheld the resolution and called on the Police to initiate an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall and tragic death of baby David Udo.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the motion’s sponsor and observed a minute of silence in memory of the toddler. The Senate then passed a resolution urging both the Federal and State Ministries of Education to enforce safety protocols in schools.
