JUST IN: Ekiti LG Election Commendations For Government, SIEC, And Voters On Peaceful Conduct.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NIHRCO) has expressed commendation for the orderly conduct of the recently concluded Local Government election in Ekiti State. The coalition, consisting of 135 civil society and community-based groups nationwide, praised the Ekiti State government and the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) for their efforts, as well as the people of the state, particularly the voters, for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the exercise.

Monitoring the election, NIHRCO observed that the voting process for the 16 Local Governments, 22 Local Council Development Areas Chairmen, and 177 Councillors, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all seats, was conducted without violence or rigging. The coalition acknowledged that while the election was not perfect, it demonstrated the quality of leadership in the state.

In a statement signed by its Programme Officers, Fred Ojinika and Taiwo Adeleye, NIHRCO praised the EKSIEC for the early arrival of materials and effective administration, resulting in minimal hitches. The coalition urged state governments across the country yet to conduct local government elections to do so, emphasizing the importance of local government administration to democracy and development.

NIHRCO mentioned that a comprehensive report on the election is underway, which will be distributed to democratic institutions at home and abroad to share lessons learned and challenges faced during the process.

The coalition called on the National Assembly to create special intervention funds to support State Independent Electoral Commissions in meeting their democratic obligations, similar to the fiscal support provided to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the Federal Government.

While noting the election’s strengths, opportunities, and shortcomings, NIHRCO encouraged the use of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) in local elections, similar to national elections. The coalition emphasized the importance of encouraging Nigerians to show interest in local government elections, believing that getting it right at the local government level would pave the way for credible national elections.
