The Federal Government has revealed its intention to close down public buildings that fail to meet the minimum standards of accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) starting from January 17. Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, made this announcement during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
The press conference was organized as part of the activities for the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed as part of the sixteenth day of activism. Lalu stated that the commission would take action immediately after the expiration of the five-year ultimatum given to organizations by the Federal Government, which is set to conclude on January 16, 2024.
The commission, tasked with enforcing disability-related laws, emphasized the transition from the advocacy phase to the enforcement phase. Lalu mentioned that the five-year period was provided for organizations to align with accessibility laws, and now, with the deadline approaching, the focus will shift to enforcement.
Lalu also outlined plans to engage relevant stakeholders and establish a special task force to ensure the proper implementation of accessibility laws. Meetings with partners will take place before the end of the year, and the task force is expected to be operational by January 17, enforcing accessibility laws effectively.
