The Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Port-Harcourt Division, Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh, has passed away at the age of 65. The respected jurist, who hailed from Benue State, reportedly died at his residence in Makurdi, situated in the Achussa Community area of the state capital, on Wednesday afternoon.
Although there has been no official statement from his family regarding his demise, the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, announced the sad news during a public function in Makurdi, where a minute of silence was observed in his honor. Sources indicate that Justice Ikyegh collapsed while making a phone call at home, and despite efforts by family members to revive him, he could not be resuscitated.
Subsequently, he was rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, where medical professionals confirmed his passing.
Known for his sound judgments and forthrightness, the 65-year-old jurist had recently been shortlisted among the 22 Justices of the Court of Appeal by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC). The list was forwarded to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for consideration for promotion to the apex court from the North Central, on a reserve basis.
