Once again, Reno Omokri, the ex-presidential aide and PDP spokesperson, has voiced his regret over a crucial decision that, in his view, significantly impacted the outcome of the Nigerian Elections 2023. Omokri laments the PDP’s failure to nominate former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate, expressing the belief that this decision could have altered the election results. In his social media declaration, Omokri emphasizes the gravity of this oversight: “The biggest mistake we made in the PDP during the #NigerianElections2023 was not giving Wike the vice Presidential slot of our party. By how many votes did we lose to the APC? Less than two million. If we had a running mate like Wike, we would have gotten that collectively from Rivers, Oyo, Abia, Enugu, and Benue with the G-5.”
Reflecting on the impact of Wike’s potential role as Vice President, Omokri underscores the influence of the G-5 group, led by Wike and composed of Makinde, Ortom, Ikpeazu, and Ugwuanyi. He suggests that their collective support could have significantly contributed to the PDP’s votes.
In a bold assertion about political strategy, Omokri states, “In politics, you do not do what you like to do. You do what you have to do.” He acknowledges that under normal circumstances, Wike’s alpha personality might not align with the role of a follower, especially as a Vice President. However, Omokri argues that the abnormal circumstances of the last election demanded unconventional measures.
Omokri contrasts PDP’s decision-making with Tinubu’s strategic understanding of the political game, referencing the Muslim-Muslim ticket as an example of unconventional choices. He concludes with a powerful affirmation: “But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do!” highlighting the necessity of decisive actions in the realm of politics.
