In a significant move confirming his intent to vie for the Edo State governorship seat in 2024, Asue Ighodalo has officially stepped down from his position as the chairman of the board of directors at Nigerian Breweries Plc. The announcement was made by the company in a corporate filing on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on December 8, 2023.

The resignation is in line with Ighodalo’s decision to pursue a political career under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming Edo state gubernatorial election. The Nigerian Breweries Plc acknowledged the chairman’s commitment to public service and disclosed that the resignation would be effective at the end of the year.

In response to this development, Anthony Ehilebo, a supporter of Ighodalo, expressed his endorsement for the resignation and rallied support for Ighodalo’s governorship candidacy. Via his official handle, Ehilebo stated, “And so it Begins… “My Guy has done this for Edo. Boss @Aighodalo we are with you… because with Ai, our future is assured! Aissured!”

The Nigerian Breweries Plc further outlined the transition plan, stating, “To give the board enough time to appoint a substantive chairman, the longest-serving director, Mr. Sijbe “Siep” Hiemstra, was appointed to act as the chairman in the interim, effective January 1, 2024.”

Meanwhile, Ndidi Nwuneli has also resigned as an independent non-executive director after completing a nine-year term, with her departure set for December 31, 2023. In her place, Stella Ojekwe-Onyejeli has been appointed as an independent non-executive director, and these changes will take effect on January 1, 2024.

In Edo, Governor Godwin Obaseki emphasizes that any potential successor must have governance experience, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape as aspirants position themselves for the 2024 elections.
