In a proactive move, Edo Civil Society Organization (EDOCSO) has cautioned the Independence Corrupt Practices and other related offences (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about the potential pitfalls of selective justice in the prosecution of offenders within Edo State.
During a protest march to the offices of both agencies in Benin, the group displayed placards with inscriptions such as “EFCC, use the same energy on Yahoo boys as on our public officials,” emphasizing the need for consistent efforts in combating corruption at various levels of government.
Addressing journalists at the ICPC’s office in Benin, the Interim TEC Chairman, Leftist Austine Enabulele, expressed disappointment with the perceived lackadaisical attitudes of these agencies towards their anti-corruption responsibilities in the state. Enabulele cited instances where the organization had submitted petitions to the ICPC, urging investigations into the alleged diversion of federal government palliatives and the activities of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). However, he lamented the agencies’ failure to take decisive actions on these matters.
Enabulele argued that if the ICPC and EFCC are incapable of fulfilling their designated roles, they should be disbanded. He stressed the importance of channeling the same level of energy used to combat cybercrime (“Yahoo boys”) towards addressing corruption among politicians and other public officeholders.
While responding to the concerns raised, the ICPC’s Head of Legal Department, Dennis Nnemeka Okoro, acknowledged the receipt of the petition regarding the diversion of federal government palliatives. Okoro assured the group that the commission had forwarded the petition to its head of office and urged them to exercise patience as they await the outcome of the investigation.
