The budget document submitted to the committee outlined the allocation of N1 billion specifically for overseas trips to Geneva, prompting strong reactions and criticisms from committee members who deemed the amount excessive and unwarranted.

The controversy escalated when the committee pressed the minister to provide an account of the 2023 budget’s performance before seeking additional funds. Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State (APC, Edo North), immediately seized the opportunity to question the substantial budget allocation for the Geneva trip.

Oshiomhole advised the minister to leverage the expertise available within her office instead of embarking on an expensive overseas trip. He emphasized the need to avoid excessive spending on bloated teams for foreign trips, suggesting that utilizing in-house experts in the respective countries could achieve the same results at a lower cost.

The exchange highlighted concerns among committee members about the proposed budget allocation and raised broader questions about the necessity and cost-effectiveness of foreign trips, urging government officials to prioritize efficient resource utilization.
