Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, emphasized the crucial role of the Nigerian parliament in facilitating the resolution of disputes between Niger and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He clarified that the sanctions imposed on Niger Republic by ECOWAS were not intended to inflict hardship on its citizens but were a response to the challenges posed by coups.
Tajudeen highlighted the detrimental impact of coups on development, drawing parallels between the historical experiences of Nigeria and Niger Republic. He underscored the need for sanctions as a deterrent to military takeovers, emphasizing that failing to address such situations could pose significant threats to the future of Africa.
The Speaker made these remarks in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation from Niger Republic, led by Boucary Sani Chaibou, the Second Vice President of the ECOWAS Parliament. Tajudeen expressed the shared cultural and religious ties between Nigeria and Niger Republic, emphasizing the importance of amicably resolving the disputes.
In addition, Tajudeen informed the Nigerien delegation about his intention to discuss the matter with President Bola Tinubu. He assured them that he would bring their concerns to the attention of the Nigerian president, aiming for a collaborative approach to address the ongoing issues between Niger and ECOWAS.
