Chigbo emphasized the ongoing prevalence of COVID-19 and advised people to overcome negative rumors surrounding the vaccine. She stressed the importance of vaccination in preventing outbreaks and highlighted the misconception that those with access to the vaccine were safeguarded from severe infections.

“The problem is that there are a lot of negative rumors about COVID-19 vaccine. There is a need to ensure that everybody gets vaccinated because this is the period that we record outbreaks. And the reason why people are not coming down with the virus is because of the vaccine,” Chigbo stated.

The Surveillance Officer urged individuals to take advantage of the available vaccines, asserting that those who do not get vaccinated when the vaccine is accessible are, in essence, endangering themselves. She disclosed that Benue recorded 25 cases this year, with no fatalities, emphasizing the importance of widespread vaccination.

Chigbo revealed that the WHO has integrated COVID-19 vaccination into routine immunization exercises to enhance coverage in the state. She explained, “We felt that if we routinise COVID-19 vaccine it would help a lot, but that might also not be effective if we don’t back it up with sensitization.”

Kaltume Ibrahim, the WHO Sub-national Technical Assistant for COVID-19/Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response, cautioned against charging mothers for vaccines meant to be administered at no cost. She emphasized that vaccines are free and accessible in all health facilities providing routine immunization.

“We are encouraging everyone in Benue from 18 years and above to present themselves for vaccination. Luckily, we have the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which is given just once,” Chigbo added.

The WHO officials stressed the importance of dispelling negative perceptions about the vaccine and reassured the public of its safety. They emphasized that vaccines are instrumental in protecting against severe infections and called for collective efforts to achieve widespread vaccination in Benue.
