In a recent budget defense session, the Senate Committee on Trade and Industry expressed disapproval of the Ministry of Trade and Investment’s alleged allocation of N1bn for a foreign trip to Geneva, Switzerland. The criticism came during Minister Anite Doris Uzoka’s presentation of the 2024 budget.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, voiced concerns about the substantial budget for the Geneva trip, urging the minister to utilize in-house experts to cut costs. He emphasized the need to avoid excessive foreign trips and suggested that the minister focus on working from her office.
Oshiomhole also raised issues about the minister’s presence in the office, stating that she seemed frequently absent during his visits. He urged her to prioritize working for the benefit of Nigerians from her office, especially since the ministry’s budget included funds for her foreign trip.
In response, Minister Uzoka defended her ability to work effectively from any location and explained that her office was currently undergoing renovation. Oshiomhole stressed the importance of practicing what is preached, advocating for the development of homegrown industries to reduce the reliance on imports.
The discussion further delved into the nation’s Balance of Trade, with Oshiomhole expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of records in the ministry. The minister admitted to the absence of such data and mentioned the establishment of a Trade Intelligence Unit to generate and store relevant information.
Oshiomhole contested the minister’s claim, asserting that data on Balance of Trade exists with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Customs, and other agencies. The disagreement highlights the ongoing scrutiny of government expenditure and the push for transparency in trade-related data management.
