The University of Uyo Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has granted a sum exceeding N1.7 million to 15 financially challenged students who demonstrated outstanding academic achievements. This generous gesture took place during the Heroes’ Day Celebration at the university on Monday, where past leaders guiding the union through challenging periods were also honored with heroes’ awards.
Commending the awardees for their dedication and selfless contributions to the union despite adversities, Prof Emmanuel Osadeke, the National President of ASUU, encouraged them to maintain their commitment to the cause. During the ceremony, he expressed concern about the alleged injustice perpetrated by vice-chancellors who, according to him, have turned staff employment into personal projects, bypassing due processes.
Prof Osadeke highlighted the absence of job advertisements in universities for the past six to 10 years while emphasizing a threefold increase in staff strength. He criticized the appointment of individuals with no academic relevance, attributing the problem to the prevailing practice of temporary appointments.
He stated, “I must heartily congratulate all the heroes honoured today for the sacrifices they made to the point of termination of appointments, seizure of salaries, demotion among other travails for speaking truth to powers for the benefit of others. Before now, university employment was done through advertisement followed by rigorous interviews, but now how do people get here? It is through temporary appointments. That’s the problem that we have today. I do not know of any university for the past six to 10 years that has advertised, but the staff strength has tripled.” Prof Osadeke also criticized the inclusion of individuals from various political backgrounds as lecturers, lamenting their lack of commitment to academic pursuits.
