The Minister of Solid Minerals Development and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Presidential Intervention, Mr. Dele Alake, provided details of the intervention during a briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Alake explained that the decision aims to alleviate the financial burden on Nigerians during the festive season and year-end travels.

Luxury bus unions, consisting of 22 designated routes for inter-state transportation, were engaged in discussions to implement the fare reduction. The initiative ensures a 50% cut in land transport fares while maintaining a ticketing system for security and logistical reasons.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed skepticism, dismissing the announcement as unworkable. NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, argued that the government lacks the authority to decree transportation fares in a free-market economy. He emphasized the challenges posed by increased fuel prices and other operational costs faced by transport operators.

Luxury bus operators in Abuja also expressed surprise and disbelief regarding the announcement, with some labeling it a mere publicity stunt. Despite the government’s claim to have engaged luxury bus unions in the decision-making process, operators questioned the practicality and sustainability of a 50% fare reduction.

The move has sparked skepticism among transport operators who argue that such a significant reduction in fares is impractical and unsustainable. Rising operational costs, including fuel prices, maintenance expenses, and employee salaries, pose significant challenges to the transport industry.
