The Court of Appeal declared Lalong as the rightful winner of the February 25 senatorial poll, leading to his resignation as the Minister of Labour Employment and Productivity on Tuesday to take up the senatorial role.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on the Senate floor at approximately 11.57 am, with the Senate President extending congratulations to Lalong. In his remarks after the inauguration, Lalong revealed that being a senator was his initial preference after concluding his governorship term in May 2023.
“This was my first choice, to be candid,” he stated, explaining that he temporarily assumed a ministerial position at the invitation of President Bola Tinubu due to a legal case he was pursuing.
Lalong assured his commitment to serving his constituents to the best of his abilities, emphasizing his desire to contribute positively to legislation. The National Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, expressed joy over Lalong’s victory at the Court of Appeal, anticipating productive legislative outcomes given the APC’s majority.
Simultaneously, the Senate President declared the senatorial seats for Ebonyi-South and Yobe East vacant. Former governor Dave Umahi, now the Minister of Works in Tinubu’s cabinet, vacated the Ebonyi-South seat. Additionally, the Yobe East senatorial seat became vacant as Ibrahim Giadam accepted Tinubu’s appointment as the Minister of Police Affairs.
Akpabio invoked Section 68 (1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to declare the two seats vacant, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to initiate the process of conducting by-elections to fill the vacant positions.
