The community expressed frustration over the worsening erosion challenges they face and accused both the Federal Government and the oil corporations of failing to address their plight.

Protesters, wielding placards bearing messages such as “We are a peaceful people and do not envisage a breakdown of law and order,” “Save Sangana Kingdom from the ravaging sea encroachment,” and “We produce the black oil of the nation and deserve better,” passionately called for urgent action to protect their community from the threat of erosion.

The demonstrators specifically named Consolidated Oil & Gas Company, Statoil, Shell (H-Block), Chevron, and NIGDEL among the neglectful oil companies operating in the area. They criticized the Nigerian government, the NDDC, and the mentioned corporations for allegedly neglecting their corporate social responsibilities despite extracting oil from Sangana Kingdom for the past three decades.

Mr. Preboye Reuben, the Community Development Chairman of Sangana Kingdom, accused the Federal Government, NDDC, and the oil companies of failing to fulfill their obligations to the community over the 25 years of crude oil production. He emphasized the urgent need for intervention, highlighting that the coastal erosion problem could lead to the extinction of Sangana Kingdom within the next decade.

Reuben called on Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, to address the dire situation. He pointed out that a shore protection contract awarded in 2009 under the leadership of former MD Mr. Timi Alaibe was abandoned after reaching 30% completion in 2010. Despite sending letters to the new NDDC management, the community has reportedly received no response.
