A 24-year-old housewife, Hafsat Surajo, has been ordered by a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kano to be remanded in a correctional centre on charges of attempting suicide and culpable homicide. The court session, presided over by Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman, took place on Wednesday, and the defendant, residing at Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, is accused of fatally stabbing her house help, Nafiu Hafizu, aged 38….CONTINUE READING
The charges stem from an incident on December 20, 2023, where Hafsat allegedly attempted suicide with a sharp knife, resulting in self-inflicted wounds on her left hand. During the attempt, she purportedly used the same knife to fatally stab Nafiu in the chest and other parts of his body, leading to his demise.
In response to the charges, Hafsat pleaded guilty to the attempt to commit suicide but pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide. Chief Magistrate Abdulrahman ordered her remand in a state correctional centre, scheduling the next hearing for February 1, 2024.
In a related development, Hafsat’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, Adamu Muhammad, and Nasidi Muhammad faced charges before the Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly concealing facts related to Nafiu’s murder. The charges include criminal conspiracy, concealment of fact, and providing false information.
The prosecutor, Lamido Sorondinki, accused the defendants of conspiring with an individual named Haruna Adamu, who is currently at large, to conceal the true cause of Nafiu’s death. The defendants allegedly provided misleading information to the deceased’s family, falsely claiming that he died due to pile surgery.
The defendants denied the charges, with their defense counsel, Rabiu Sidi and Rabiu Abdullahi, requesting bail based on constitutional provisions. The judge, however, ruled for the defendants to be remanded in a correctional centre and set the next court appearance for January 8, 2024. The prosecution assured that all necessary case materials would be provided to the defense counsel for review.
