In a viral video recorded at a nightclub in Abuja, the son of Yusuf Bichi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), was seen spraying bundles of new Naira notes on popular actress Regina Daniels, who is also the wife of Senator Ned Nwoko. This lavish act, however, has faced criticism, especially on Instagram, where he has a significant following. Public discussions have emerged regarding the appropriateness of such displays, particularly considering his father’s high-ranking position in the nation’s secret police.
The act of spraying Naira notes in public gatherings is not only considered offensive under The CBN Act 2007, section 21, sub-sections 3 and 4, but it is also deemed insensitive amid the current scarcity of currency, impacting Nigerians during the Yuletide. Such actions are punishable under the mentioned legal provisions for abuse and defacing of the Naira.
The scarcity of cash in banks, especially during the Yuletide, reportedly affected economic activities in Southeast Nigeria, leading to struggles among residents to purchase essential items. The Central Bank of Nigeria attributed the scarcity to hoarding of Naira notes by individuals, emphasizing that there were enough notes in circulation to meet cash needs. The CBN vowed to monitor the situation and ensure the sufficient distribution of cash to banks nationwide. The extravagant act of spraying money raises concerns about responsible behavior, particularly in the public eye, and the potential consequences for violating legal provisions.
