Decoding History: The Epic Shift From Lagos To Abuja – Unveiling The Birth Of Nigeria’s Capital!....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In 1960, Nigeria gained political independence as a sovereign state under the 1960 Constitution from Britain. At the time, Lagos served as the capital, inherited from the colonial era and situated centrally in terms of international trade but distant from most constituent states concerning administrative and cultural affairs.

As Lagos rapidly expanded, becoming both the Federal capital City of Nigeria and that of Lagos State raised concerns. Intolerable living and working conditions, intractable traffic, chronic housing shortages, congestion, overstretched infrastructure, and severe environmental sanitation problems highlighted the challenges.

Various factors, such as Lagos being the commercial nerve center, concerns about relocating the aborigines, scarcity of land, security risks, skewed location, and potential submarine wreckage, prompted the military regime of late Murtala Mohammed to establish a panel in August 1975.

This committee, led by Justice Akinola Aguda, was tasked with determining if Lagos should retain its dual role or if the capital should move. If relocation was recommended, the committee had the responsibility to suggest suitable alternative locations, considering easy access to and from every part of the country, among other factors.

The panel’s recommendation was a pivotal moment — the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) should be moved out of Lagos. The criteria for the new capital included a site with a favorable climate, ample land, and abundant water. Teams explored potential locations in the existing twelve Nigerian states, examining their capitals.

Drawing inspiration from world capitals like Brasília (Brazil), Islamabad (Pakistan), Paris (France), St. Petersburg (Russia), and Washington, D.C. (United States), Nigeria chose Abuja. This marked the beginning of the development and evolution of the Federal Capital Territory, with Abuja eventually emerging as the new political and administrative center of the country.
