A credible source within the EFCC has disclosed that the passports of both Edu and the former Minister have been confiscated as a precautionary measure to prevent them from leaving the country while the investigations are still ongoing.
“The commission has seized the passports of the two former ministers, Sadiya Umar-Farouq and Betta Edu. We have also seized Mrs. Halima Shehu’s passport pending the conclusion of investigations. The commission does not want to risk having any of them leave the country while they still have questions to answer,” stated the source.
Edu appeared at the EFCC headquarters on Tuesday at approximately 10 am to respond to inquiries regarding alleged financial corruption within the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Ministry.
This development follows a leaked memo revealing that Edu had requested the payment of N585 million, intended for vulnerable individuals, to be transferred into a private account belonging to one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola. In response to public outcry, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed a thorough investigation into Edu’s actions and an inquiry into the ministry’s operations.
Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the former Minister during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, is also under investigation for alleged fraud committed during her tenure, with the combined amount reaching over N40 billion.
In connection with the ongoing investigation of Edu and Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the EFCC has summoned the Chief Executive Officers of Zenith, Providus, and Jaiz banks to provide relevant information at its office on Tuesday.
Furthermore, Halima Shehu, the suspended Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, is also subject to investigation by the EFCC.
