In a statement on his X-handle platform, Obi welcomed the suspension of the minister but stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation beyond the suspension. He called for urgent attention to be given to the issue of public sector corruption.

Expressing disappointment, Obi pointed out that a ministry intended to address the needs of the masses was being exploited for corrupt practices by the current and previous ministers.

“I join the majority of Nigerians concerned about accountability in government and the proper use of public funds in welcoming Edu’s suspension and subsequent directives for her investigation. The inquiry must be thorough to ensure all those responsible are held accountable,” said Obi.

Cautioning against trivializing the matter, Obi emphasized that the minister’s suspension should not be merely symbolic but should lead to the prosecution of all those culpable.

Obi drew attention to the alleged fraudulent diversion of N585 million of public funds by Edu, coinciding with the investigation of the former minister holding the same portfolio in the previous administration for a N37 billion misappropriation.

“The ministry may have been established as a channel to siphon public funds while using the poor as a front. It is not only immoral but also insensitive for those entrusted with funds for public welfare to steal from the poor,” Obi remarked.

He urged the Tinubu administration to use these cases as an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive, system-wide investigation into reported cases of fraud and corruption among high government officials.

President Tinubu had suspended Edu on Monday, citing controversies surrounding financial transactions she authorized, including the approval of payments into private accounts of civil servants.

Edu faced criticism for transferring N585.2 million into the private bank account of a civil servant responsible for grants for vulnerable Nigerians, as revealed in a memo issued to the accountant general of the federation in December 2023.
