The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has pledged to explore measures aimed at mitigating the impact of soaring food prices and improving the well-being of Nigerians. Speaking during a courtesy call by Ekiti State Governor, ‘Biodun Oyebanji, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, Kyari also outlined plans for reducing food prices, citing the ongoing dry season farming and the imminent start of wet season farming. Addressing concerns about rising food prices, Kyari acknowledged the influence of porous borders, the weak Naira, and attractive prices in neighboring countries. He highlighted the ministry’s scrutiny of grain purchases to avoid market disruptions and indicated an upcoming statement addressing the issue.
In a reciprocal gesture, the Minister praised Governor Oyebanji’s initiatives in enhancing food security in Ekiti State, particularly the achievements in land preparation for increased cultivable areas. He expressed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the state, emphasizing the importance of partnerships to address issues such as round-tripping and the validation of farmers’ data.
Kyari outlined the ministry’s dedication to implementing stringent measures during the Dry/Wet Season Farming for key crops like rice, maize, and cassava. He emphasized the need for collaboration with various stakeholders, including states, local governments, traditional rulers, farmers’ associations, NGOs, and relevant government agencies, to ensure transparent distribution and target genuine farmers.
Acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for food security initiatives, Kyari expressed gratitude for the unwavering backing from the federal government. He highlighted the ministry’s focus on leveraging technology and mechanization to achieve massive production of staple crops. Additionally, Kyari stressed the importance of collaborating with landowners and state governments to address challenges such as corrupted farmer lists and enhance the success of agricultural programs. The Minister concluded by expressing optimism about the upcoming second phase of the Dry/Wet Season Farming intervention, scheduled to commence that month.
