Primary school teachers had initially initiated an indefinite strike in September of the previous year due to issues such as the non-implementation of a 40 percent Peculiar Allowance and the non-payment of 25 months minimum wage arrears. The strike, however, was temporarily suspended for six weeks to facilitate the resolution of these matters following the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Wike had subsequently established a six-man committee to examine the concerns and propose solutions.
Expressing concern over the elapsed six weeks with no positive outcomes, despite the committee submitting its report, the teachers underscored their disappointment. In response, the SWSC declared that, “Saddened by the suffering of the teachers and the nonpayment of the aforementioned entitlements, the SWSC has no other option than to direct all primary school teachers in FCT to resume the suspended strike.” The directive instructs FCT primary school teachers to resume the suspended strike action from Monday, January 15, until further notice, urging parents to ensure the safety of their children and wards by keeping them at home.
