Pantami shared his concerns through an official statement on Monday, emphasizing that during his tenure, he had tested the efficacy of the policy in tracking criminals. He attributed the challenges faced by the Nigerian government in apprehending terrorists and bandits to the reluctance of relevant stakeholders to fully utilize the policy.

The former minister highlighted that the NIN-SIM policy had proven effective in the past, but its success depended on the proper implementation by institutions responsible for combating criminal activities. Pantami acknowledged instances during his term where the policy had been employed successfully, contributing to the success of security operations.

Expressing his dismay over the lack of utilization, Pantami revealed that he faced threats to his life for reintroducing the policy. Despite the challenges, he stood firm and ensured the policy’s implementation, emphasizing that the main issue was the failure to utilize it effectively by the institutions responsible for securing lives and property.

Pantami clarified that the NIN-SIM policy was a valuable tool, citing its successful implementation in three instances during his tenure. He expressed deep concern for the rising cases of kidnappings and disturbances in the country, urging relevant institutions to make use of the policy to address security challenges.

The NIN-SIM policy, authorized by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, came into effect on April 4, 2022. It mandated telephone companies to block outgoing calls on unlinked cell phone lines as part of efforts to enhance strategic planning, especially in the areas of security and socioeconomic projections, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Despite the implementation of the NIN-SIM policy, cases of kidnappings and abductions have continued to increase, leading residents to question the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the program advocated by Pantami during his tenure. The former minister reiterated his commitment to the policy and called for its proper utilization to ensure the safety and stability of Nigeria.
