In a statement to The BUSHRADIOGIST, Afikuyomi detailed the incident, emphasizing the scammers’ manipulation of his phone and WhatsApp messages. He expressed gratitude to friends who promptly contacted him, but lamented that a few fell prey to the deceptive requests, transferring millions of naira to the provided account numbers.

Taking swift action, Afikuyomi reported the incident to relevant authorities, including the anti-fraud unit of the police. Efforts to trace the fraudsters and identify account owners are underway, with ongoing investigations.

As a precaution, Afikuyomi suspended the use of his WhatsApp number until authorities complete their investigations and additional security measures are implemented. He urged contact through regular phone calls on the same number.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the banking system, Afikuyomi criticized the lack of due diligence in opening accounts, allowing scammers to exploit weaknesses. He also highlighted potential non-compliance of Over Top Media Services providers with Nigeria’s Data Privacy and Protection Laws.

Determined to combat the syndicate responsible for the scam, Afikuyomi pledged legal action and thanked notable figures, including the Governor of Lagos State, the Minister of Interior, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the National Financial Intelligence Agency, and the Deputy Governor (Corporate Services) of the Central Bank of Nigeria, for their efforts in uncovering the perpetrators.

Afikuyomi emphasized the challenges of the modern technological age, urging caution and discernment in responding to messages, particularly those involving financial transfers. He acknowledged the dark side of technology, posing risks to lives and properties, and called for increased vigilance in the face of impersonal, distrustful, and distasteful challenges.
