A United States judge, Theresa Adams, from the Baltimore County Circuit Court, has imposed a historic $50,000 in damages on Funke Ashekun, a US-based Nigerian blogger, for defamation against Dr. Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM). The judgment, rendered in the case with Case Number: C-03-CV-22-004424, resulted in a unanimous ruling in favor of MFM USA and its three pastors, Grace Ugeh, Kunle Ladipo, and Adekunle Adekola.

MFM asserted that Ashekun, a recent immigrant to the US, had been actively spreading false information on social media to tarnish the reputation of the MFM Church and its General Overseer. Ashekun, responding to the lawsuit in a video posted on her YouTube channel on November 28, 2023, disclosed that she had been sued by MFM and specifically named three pastors, Adekunle Adekola, Kunle Ladipo, and Grace Ugeh, from different MFM branches in the US.

She expressed surprise at being sued by individuals she claimed not to know, emphasizing her focus on addressing issues of sexual assault within religious institutions rather than targeting any specific church or pastor. Ashekun affirmed that she is the respondent in the lawsuit in her personal capacity.

In reaction to the court’s decision, MFM’s lead counsel, Gilbert Garcia, conveyed the church’s satisfaction, stating that the jury’s findings aligned with and vindicated their position.

This legal battle underscores the clash between freedom of expression and defamation concerns within the context of social media commentary on religious institutions.
