According to reports from Wion News, the leaders of the three Sahel nations declared the decision as a “sovereign” one, asserting their right to leave ECOWAS “without delay.” Colonel Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for the Niger junta, expressed disappointment, stating, “After 49 years, the valiant peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger regretfully and with great disappointment observe that the (ECOWAS) organization has drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.”
One of the key grievances cited by the military regimes is the alleged failure of ECOWAS to assist the three states in their fight against terrorism and insecurity. The statement emphasized that ECOWAS did not provide adequate support in addressing the existential threats faced by the member nations.
In a move that preceded this withdrawal, the three countries had signed a mutual defense pact in September 2023, known as the “Alliance of Sahel States.” This pact committed the nations to assist each other in the face of armed rebellion or external aggression, including potential military cooperation.
Mali’s military leader, Assimi Goita, confirmed the establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States on his social media account, stating, “I have today signed with the Heads of State of Burkina Faso and Niger the Liptako-Gourma charter establishing the Alliance of Sahel States, with the aim of establishing a collective defense and mutual assistance framework.”
This withdrawal from ECOWAS comes after a period of regional unrest, including a military coup in Niger last July. In response to the coup, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger and even threatened military action. The latest development underscores the evolving geopolitical landscape in West Africa and raises questions about the future of regional cooperation and security arrangements.
