The Nigerian army expressed regret and issued an apology for the accidental air strike that resulted in the bombing of residents of Rukubi community in Doma Local Government Area in January 2023.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, personally extended the force’s apologies during a condolence visit to Governor Abdullahi Sule in Lafia, the state capital. Abubakar explained that the airstrike was not deliberate and that the force was attempting to neutralize suspected terrorists when the tragic incident occurred.

In response to the development, Shehu Sani took to his social media handle, stating: “It’s been one year since the Airforce accidentally dropped a bomb on a civilian target in Nasarawa state that led to the killing of 39 persons and the injuries of [an unspecified number]. Now that the tragic ‘mistake’ is admitted, compensation must be paid to the victims’ families.”

This tragic incident raises concerns about the military’s operational methods and the collateral damage inflicted on innocent civilians in the course of combating insecurity. The acknowledgment of the mistake by the Airforce is an essential step, and the call for compensation by Shehu Sani underscores the need for accountability and justice for the affected families.
