The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, has initiated an investigation into allegations of bribery against the Epe Divisional Police Officer, Godwin Okoruwa. Following a publication titled “Lagos DPO Queried For Accepting N2m To Release Suspected Armed Robbers” by an online medium, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Humdeyin, clarified that CP Fayoade ordered the investigation and instructed Okoruwa to step aside during the inquiry………CONTINUE READING
The online publication had claimed that Okoruwa accepted a N2 million cheque from a local monarch in Epe to release four suspected armed robbers detained by detectives during a stop-and-search operation. Allegedly, the monarch asserted that the arrested individuals were not criminals but his associates. However, Humdeyin dismissed the notion that the CP had queried Okoruwa over the matter.
In a statement, Humdeyin clarified, “CP Adegoke Fayoade has ordered an investigation into the allegations contained in this publication. Pending the outcome of the investigation and on the instructions of the CP, the DPO has stepped aside. Meanwhile, we can confirm that the suspects were transferred to the headquarters the same day they were arrested, and there is no truth in the claim that the DPO was queried.”
A police source, knowledgeable about the situation, refuted the bribery allegations, emphasizing that Okoruwa had not received any bribe and had no association with the monarch. The source revealed that previous reports had highlighted ongoing conflicts between the monarch and Okoruwa. The source further explained that during a stop-and-search operation conducted by Okoruwa’s team, two locally made pistols and a Sienna bus were seized. Subsequently, another DPO in Epe expressed interest in the case, but Okoruwa, adhering to protocol, declined to release the suspects. The CP then reportedly directed Okoruwa to transfer the case to the headquarters.
The police source expressed surprise at the online allegations, suggesting a deliberate attempt to tarnish Okoruwa’s reputation by falsely claiming that a monarch had bribed him to prevent the transfer of the case. The investigation will seek to establish the veracity of these claims and determine the appropriate course of action.
