The criminal incident unfolded in Kawu community within the Bwari area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on December 26, 2023, when the assailants abducted 23 individuals. While some managed to escape, 17 were left in captivity.

Reportedly, the bandits, growing impatient with the delayed ransom, issued threats to harm the hostages. Bala Dantani, a family member of one of the victims, disclosed to DailyTrust on Friday, Feb. 2, that the ransom was paid in installments.

Initially, a sum of N5 million was raised and delivered to the bandits following their two-week-old threat to execute the captives. Additionally, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, another N3.5 million, along with food supplies, medicines, and beverages, was provided to the bandits after their leader assured the release of the hostages.

However, while awaiting instructions on where to retrieve the victims that Tuesday, the individual who delivered the ransom returned with distressing news. The bandits, once again, altered their conditions, now demanding the provision of two motorcycles before releasing the remaining captives, adding another layer of complexity to the already dire situation.
