Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on World Cancer Day, Prof. Malami highlighted the strategic procurement of advanced cancer treatment equipment as a significant step towards closing the care gap and enhancing the infrastructure of cancer care nationwide. He emphasized the positive impact of improved cancer health funding and the introduction of a childhood cancer counterpart fund, viewing these initiatives as pivotal steps towards achieving equitable and sustainable financing for cancer care and treatment.
In his World Cancer Day message, Prof. Malami urged everyone to join in raising awareness about cancer’s impact on individuals, families, and societies. He acknowledged cancer as a relentless disease affecting people of all ages, races, and backgrounds, but stressed that with early detection, prevention, and access to quality treatment, many cases can be effectively managed.
The President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Dr. Adamu Alhassan Umar, echoed the need for urgent action to bridge the cancer care gap in the country. He commended the establishment of NICRAT as a milestone offering hope for improved cancer research and treatment in Nigeria. Dr. Umar called on citizens to share cancer knowledge, embrace government initiatives like the national HPV Vaccine rollout, adopt healthy lifestyles, and obtain insurance coverage to unite against the menace of cancer.
Furthermore, Dr. Umar urged the government to increase funding for cancer research and facilitate collaboration among researchers, healthcare providers, and community organizations. He emphasized the importance of incorporating comprehensive cancer services and ensuring universal health coverage by including cancer services in national health benefit packages. Overall, the government’s commitment to advancing cancer care was underscored as a critical initiative, providing necessary resources to enhance patient care and support throughout the country.
