Peterside made these remarks in response to the recent advisory issued by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria to its citizens residing in South Africa.

The advisory, released on Monday, cited “potentially inflammatory” online comments by some South Africans against Nigerians living in the country ahead of the AFCON semi-final.

The High Commission, situated in Pretoria, South Africa, cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant and maintain good conduct before, during, and after the match.

However, addressing the situation on Channels Television ahead of Wednesday’s AFCON semi-final between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana, Peterside emphasized that there exists a rivalry of supremacy between the two nations, which extends beyond football and borders on political issues.

“The circular was forwarded to me. We’ve faced harassment like this before. But there’s an underlying rivalry between our nations,” Peterside stated.

“This rivalry is about supremacy. It’s not confined to football; it’s political. On a lighter note, their women seem to favor us more than their men, and this rivalry transcends football. It’s happened numerous times, and we cannot afford to ignore it.”

He further remarked, “Whether we win or they win, there’s a possibility they’ll attack us. This isn’t just about football; it’s about xenophobia
