Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the establishment of these centers and emphasized the military’s commitment to addressing PTSD among troops. In a recent interview, he acknowledged the occurrence of an incident in Sokoto, assuring that measures were in place to handle mental health issues arising from the exposure of troops to the challenges of insurgency.

There has been a concerning increase in incidents of soldiers taking their own lives, with many attributing these tragedies to PTSD. PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can affect individuals who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events or circumstances.

The report highlighted a recent incident in Sokoto, where a soldier identified as CPL James Kingsley, attached to team 3 of Operations Hadrin Daji, killed a colleague and engaged in a shooting spree against others. Kingsley was ultimately neutralized by a fellow soldier while firing indiscriminately.

The article also cited instances of soldiers taking their own lives, such as the case of CPL James Kingsley in Sokoto and Boyi ThankGod in Abeokuta. Additionally, it mentioned a soldier who shot and wounded a United Nations helicopter co-pilot, causing fatalities at a military base in Borno.

The establishment of PTSD Centers by the Defence Headquarters reflects a proactive approach to address the mental health challenges faced by frontline soldiers, underscoring the importance of prioritizing the well-being of military personnel engaged in challenging operations.
