The decision by these three countries to exit ECOWAS, officially announced on Sunday, January 28, follows their establishment of military regimes and the severance of diplomatic ties with France, signaling a significant shift in regional dynamics. The move has triggered sanctions from the regional bloc, raising concerns about potential implications for security and economic stability, especially for Nigeria amidst ongoing insurgency challenges and economic pressures.
Experts have expressed concerns about the potential impact on Nigeria, emphasizing the critical nature of security and economic ties within the ECOWAS region. President Tinubu’s delegation aims to address these concerns by fostering dialogue and exploring solutions to the challenges posed by the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the bloc.
During an extraordinary session of the ECOWAS mediation and security council, Amb. Tuggar highlighted the delegation’s efforts to address pressing issues facing member states, including climate change, violent extremism, migration, and organized crime. Defence Minister Badaru, speaking at the session, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional security collaboration. He stressed the importance of collective action to tackle security challenges in the region, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to regional peace and stability.
Henshaw Ogubike, the spokesperson for the Defence Ministry, quoted Badaru’s commitment to working with ECOWAS counterparts to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens. ECOWAS President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, echoed the sentiment of unity and collective problem-solving, marking the delegation’s visit as a pivotal moment for the bloc to address common challenges.
President Tinubu’s team engaging with the governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso signifies a crucial step toward reconciling differences within the ECOWAS community and reinforcing the foundations of regional cooperation and security.
