Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of Customs, revealed this information in a statement on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Felarun and Jelili received a 2-year imprisonment sentence with hard labor, and the option of a fine was not available. This verdict was delivered by Honourable Justice Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta.

The convictions, obtained on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, were a result of their engagement in activities that violated customs laws. These activities included assembling to contravene customs laws, possession of smuggled goods, and assaulting Customs Officers using charms and horsewhips at Owoyele-Igbogila, Yewa-North Local Government, Ogun State in 2023.

In a statement, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, emphasized that a total of 11 suspects were convicted for various offenses such as improper importation, assault on Customs officers, possession of Pangolin scales intended for export, and other illicit items. Additionally, ongoing smuggling and related cases are currently in various stages of prosecution and will be diligently pursued.

Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili were initially brought to court in May 2023, facing a three-count charge. The successful prosecution underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to upholding the law and ensuring the protection of its officers from assaults and illegal activities.
