The incident, attributed to negligence on the part of the occupants, resulted in the destruction of properties valued at millions of naira.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unfortunate event occurred around 11 p.m. and continued into the early hours of Monday. Prompt response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA), and other emergency responders managed to contain the inferno, preventing its spread to nearby high-end properties.

During the firefighting efforts, 62 gas cylinders were discovered, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire as they ignited simultaneously. The fire was successfully extinguished by 1 a.m., with the mop-up operation concluding around 3 a.m. for property assessment. The enumeration process was ongoing at the time of reporting.

The ravaged properties included makeshift structures, household items, cash, and other valuables worth millions of naira.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, credited the timely intervention of firefighters from the Oniru and Lekki Phase II Fire Stations for preventing further damage to neighboring properties. A preliminary investigation indicated negligence on the part of the occupants as the cause of the inferno.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, but two adult males sustained injuries and received treatment from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), both in stable condition.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of the report.

In a related development, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in collaboration with the Lagos State Safety Commission, initiated a comprehensive fire safety awareness campaign to address the rising incidence of fire outbreaks, particularly during the harmattan period.

The campaign, led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, and Director of the Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, aimed to educate traders on the importance of fire safety measures.

Adeseye emphasized the need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, especially during the harmattan season, citing approximately 251 fire-related emergency calls received in January alone. She urged market dwellers to prioritize safety compliance and collective responsibility toward fire prevention, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of fire incidents.

The director reiterated the importance of promptly reporting emergencies to the state’s toll-free numbers, 767 or 112, for swift response and to minimize property damage and loss of life.

The ongoing awareness campaign builds upon recent simulation exercises involving public servants and market traders, demonstrating a proactive approach to community safety. Future outreach initiatives are planned to extend the campaign’s reach to diverse segments of the population, including grassroots communities, fostering a culture of fire safety awareness and preparedness.
