Following a meeting at its Milan headquarters, Serie A affirmed in a statement that the league’s structure of 20 teams will remain intact. Reports suggest that only Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, and Roma supported the proposal for reduction, with the remaining 16 clubs voting against it.
The discussion surrounding reducing the number of teams in Italy’s top flight has been ongoing, fueled by concerns over the increasing number of matches played by top clubs and players. Despite changes to the Champions League format, which will require teams to play additional matches before reaching the knockout stages, the majority of Serie A clubs opposed the idea of downsizing the league.
The proposal was perceived as catering solely to the interests of the biggest clubs, drawing criticism from smaller clubs like Lecce. Saverio Sticchi Damiani, the president of Lecce, expressed opposition to the proposal, emphasizing the importance of preserving opportunities for all teams to pursue their dreams.
In addition to the decision on league size, Serie A announced approval of reforms to Italian football, which will be presented to the country’s governing federation FIGC in the coming month. The league aims to advocate for greater autonomy, a move reminiscent of the governance model adopted by England’s Premier League, as highlighted by Serie A president Lorenzo Casini earlier this month.
Despite the push for change by some of Italy’s prominent clubs, Serie A’s decision to maintain its current structure underscores a commitment to preserving the integrity and inclusivity of the league.
