On October 20, 1981, a group of criminals led by Tupac’s stepfather, Mutulu Shakur, intercepted a bullion van in Rockland County, New York, and stole $1.6 million. One guard and two police officers were killed during the operation.

Mutulu Shakur was the leader of the Black Liberation Army called “The Family.” Shakur named the robbery“ The Big Dance” and planned to use the $1.6 million to fund their revolutionary efforts, Shakur’s arrest was issued, and he made the FBI Top Ten list in July 1982.

More than three years later, on February 12, 1986 he was arrested and sentenced to life in prison.

He is currently 72. In June 2022, it was revealed that he has terminal bone marrow cancer with “six months to live”
