Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed concern over the insufficient salaries of federal lawmakers in relation to the significant responsibilities they bear. Kalu made these remarks during an interview on Channels TV on February 26.

While rejecting calls for a reduction in lawmakers’ salaries, Kalu emphasized that the current salary structure is distinct from allowances, which are allocated for specific tasks related to constituents’ needs. He stressed that allowances are strictly monitored, and any misuse could result in sanctions upon retirement.

Kalu argued that the existing salaries are inadequate, stating that even a 50% or 80% reduction would not align with the economic realities of the country. Considering factors such as inflation, transportation costs, and the maintenance of constituency offices, he asserted that lawmakers’ earnings are insufficient to effectively carry out their duties in their respective constituencies.

Acknowledging the need for adjustment based on economic indicators, Kalu expressed lawmakers’ willingness to consider changes if it would contribute to the country’s progress. He emphasized that elected officials are accountable to their constituents who voted them into office.
