Tragically, Herbert Wigwe, along with his wife and son, lost their lives in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, while en route to attend the Super Bowl LVIII championship in Las Vegas.
Following the unfortunate incident, dignitaries, including prominent businessmen, governors, and government officials, gathered in the commercial hub of the nation to commence Wigwe’s burial rites under the theme ‘Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – A Professional Legacy.’ Among those present were Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group; Yemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, among others.
Governor Sanwo-Olu eulogized Wigwe, stating that he embodied the true spirit of Lagos State, emphasizing that the commercial center would not forget his contributions. Describing Wigwe as a “completely detribalized” individual, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged his lasting impact on Lagos.
Yemi Cardoso and Wale Edun also paid tribute to the late Access Holding group CEO, recalling his significant contributions to the nation’s economy. Edun highlighted Wigwe’s creative thinking and abundance of innovative ideas, while Cardoso mourned the profound loss the nation had suffered.
