Traditional Religion Worshippers’ Association Calls for Inclusion of Traditional Religious Knowledge in School Curriculum

Fayemi Fakayode, Secretary of the Oyo State branch of the Traditional Religion Worshippers’ Association, has urged both Federal and State Governments to integrate traditional religious knowledge (TRK) into school curricula.

Expressing his views in Ibadan on Wednesday, March 27, Fakayode emphasized the importance of incorporating TRK into primary and secondary education, akin to the teaching of Islamic Religious Knowledge and Christian Religious Knowledge. He argued that such inclusion would serve to instill the Yoruba culture and tradition in the younger generation.

In a personally signed statement, Fakayode highlighted the necessity of providing accurate education to dispel misconceptions about Yoruba history and traditions among youths. He lamented the widespread misinformation about African origins and culture, attributing it to the neglect of traditional religion.

During the installation ceremony of two Brazilians, Awoyomi Fakayode and Iyanifa Ifatayo Obemo, as Mayegun and Yeye Mayegun of Ìjọ Ìmọ́lẹ̀ Olódùmarè Àgbáyé respectively, at Alade Town in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, Fakayode reiterated the call for government action.

“The time has come for both Federal and State Governments to include TRK as a subject in primary and secondary school curricula, akin to IRK and CRK,” stated Fakayode. He stressed the importance of educating younger generations about traditions and religion, equipping them with culturally relevant knowledge for the benefit of themselves and their community. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of instilling patriotism to prevent betrayal of ancestral values.
