Buhari’s Ex-Minister Alleges Banditry In Northern Nigeria Rooted In Systemic Neglect Of The Poor
Adebayo Shittu, a former Minister of Communications during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, posited that the surge of banditry in Northern Nigeria signifies a form of rebellion fueled by socio-economic neglect. He articulated this perspective during an interview on Arise Television.
Shittu highlighted the correlation between the prevalence of banditry and the deficiency in education among certain demographics. He emphasized that the relatively lower incidence of banditry in the Southwest can be attributed to a higher level of educational attainment in the region.
In his analysis, Shittu characterized the unrest in the Northwest and Northeast as a manifestation of discontent stemming from the marginalization of economically disadvantaged individuals. He critiqued the predominant approach of deploying substantial financial resources towards kinetic measures, advocating instead for addressing the root causes, particularly the lack of educational opportunities.
Shittu underscored the importance of education in fostering social cohesion and mitigating disparities that often breed resentment and rebellion. He argued that neglecting to provide adequate education perpetuates social inequalities, leading disillusioned individuals to rebel against societal norms.
This perspective from Shittu follows his earlier recommendation to the administration led by President Bola Tinubu to explore negotiation as a means of offering bandits a more promising future.
