EFCC Mulls Over Appealing Malabu Oil Deal Decision, Considers Legal Representation Change....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its reevaluation of the acquittal of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke, in the Malau OPL 245 fraud case by a Federal Capital Territory High Court.

This decision follows the agency’s denial of reports alleging that parties involved in the trial bribed its prosecutor, Offem Uket, to mishandle the case.

Adoke, alongside Aliyu Abubakar, Gbinije of Malabu Oil and Gas Limited, Nigeria Agip Exploration Limited, Shell Ultra Deep Nigeria Limited, and Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company Limited, was indicted on January 15, 2020. Adoke was specifically accused of receiving a gratification of N300 million from Abubakar regarding the OPL 245 resolution.

The trial judge, Abubakar Kutigi, dismissed the charges against Adoke upon ruling on the no-case submission filed by the accused. Kutigi cited the EFCC’s failure to substantiate charges of fraud, bribery, and money laundering and criticized the agency for investing four years in a trial without presenting concrete evidence.

In a statement released by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, on Friday, it was stated that the EFCC is currently reviewing the situation surrounding the Malabu OPL 245 fraud case. This includes the dismissal of charges against Adoke and the conduct of the prosecuting counsel, Offem Uket.

The review process may involve considering the option of appeal and a potential change of counsel due to the commission’s dissatisfaction with Uket’s handling of the case.

Oyewale clarified that the review is not connected to speculations suggesting intentional mishandling of the case by the EFCC prosecutor. He emphasized that the EFCC has not accused any party involved of misconduct and has not made any definitive statements regarding ongoing investigations.
