Nigerian Army Detains Soldiers Suspected Of Cable Theft At Dangote Refinery
The Nigerian Army has verified the apprehension of two soldiers implicated in the theft of armored cables at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos State. CPL Innocent Joseph and L/CPL Jacob Gani were detained last Sunday upon suspicion of attempting to exit the facility with 897 cut-to-size armored cables.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, expressed deep concern, labeling the incident as “completely unacceptable and deeply regrettable.” The suspects are presently in custody and will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary actions.
“The Nigerian Army (NA) is deeply troubled by the alleged involvement of two of its personnel in a reported theft at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos,” the statement conveyed. “This criminal act, fortunately thwarted by vigilant troops and private security operatives stationed at the refinery, does not align with the ethics and values of the NA.”
Initial findings indicate that the soldiers were enlisted by a civilian contractor, identified as Mr. Smart, under the pretense of retrieving some armored cables left on the refinery’s premises. However, upon nearing the security post, Mr. Smart absconded, leaving the soldiers behind.
Further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the extent of the soldiers’ involvement. The stolen cables have been recovered and are secured. The NA is collaborating with Dangote Refinery management to conduct a thorough investigation.
The statement emphasized the NA’s commitment to upholding discipline and integrity, affirming that no criminal activity will be tolerated within its ranks. It pledged to enforce appropriate disciplinary measures and promote a culture of accountability and ethical conduct among its personnel.
