Fuel Shortage Concerns Grow: Osun Officials Issue Warning To Petrol Retailers

In response to the escalating fuel crisis in Osun State, the Taskforce on Petroleum Price Monitoring has issued a strong admonition to petrol station proprietors across the region regarding the hoarding of petroleum products. This proactive measure aims to curb the artificial scarcity contributing to a significant surge in fuel prices, as reported by Naija News.

The Chairman of the task force and the State Governor’s chief of staff, Kazeem Akinleye, delivered this cautionary message on Sunday in Osogbo. It comes amid the mounting pump prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, reaching as high as ₦700 to ₦750 per litre in certain areas, accompanied by the resurgence of long queues at fuel stations.

Akinleye highlighted, “Our surveillance over the past three days in major towns and the state capital has revealed a deliberate hoarding of fuel by certain stations, aimed at creating an artificial scarcity.” He further disclosed that the task force has compiled a list of stations engaged in such malpractices.

Those implicated have been instructed by the task force to promptly commence the distribution of their stocked petrol to the public. Akinleye stressed the importance for marketers to adopt a more compassionate approach to petroleum product pricing, particularly considering the prevailing economic challenges confronting citizens.

“Failure to comply with these directives and to consider the prevailing economic conditions will lead to severe sanctions,” the statement cautioned. The task force pledged to escalate its monitoring efforts to thwart further exploitation and ensure the availability and affordability of fuel for all residents of the state.
