Constitution Review Committee Schedules Meeting With Tinubu And Kalu
The National Assembly Constitution Review Committee, led by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, is poised to convene with President Bola Tinubu to ensure the smooth progression of the constitutional review process. Speaking in Abuja during his address at the joint retreat of the Senate and House committees on constitution review, Kalu emphasized the necessity for robust collaboration among all stakeholders to achieve outcomes aligned with the aspirations of Nigerians.
Highlighting the significance of the ongoing exercise, Kalu envisioned it as a platform for extensive national discourse and dialogue. He underscored the importance of soliciting recommendations from relevant stakeholders and the public to inform legislative actions that resonate with Nigeria’s evolving societal, economic, and political ethos.
In a bid to address previous amendment proposals that faced obstacles, Kalu urged stakeholders to revisit these issues and devise strategies to overcome past hurdles. He emphasized the need for a continuous and inclusive constitutional review process, involving all segments of Nigerian society. Issues such as state police and special representation for women were cited as focal points in the discussions.
Acknowledging the groundwork laid by previous assemblies, particularly the 9th Assembly which saw the assent of 18 Constitution amendment bills by the President, Kalu lauded the stakeholders for their dedication and patriotism.
