The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, has called on lawmakers and stakeholders to resist any legislation permitting the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) if it poses risks to humanity.
Speaking through his Vicar General, Rev. Felix Odesanmi, during the 58th World Social Communications Day at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Bishop Ajakaye emphasized the need for vigilance against the negative impacts of AI.
He urged professionals and journalists to speak out against the potential dangers associated with AI, cautioning that while technology brings benefits, it also presents economic and moral challenges.
“While we acknowledge the positive aspects of technology, we must be mindful of its adverse effects, such as economic repercussions leading to unemployment and moral dilemmas,” Bishop Ajakaye remarked. “The increasing prevalence of AI threatens to exacerbate unemployment rates, particularly in Africa, and around the world.”
Expressing concern over the rapid advancement of AI technology and its potential to replace human jobs, Bishop Ajakaye emphasized the importance of recognizing human dignity and the limitations of AI.
“Artificial intelligence lacks consciousness and moral judgment, posing significant dangers to society,” he warned. “We must not allow financial interests to override ethical considerations. It is imperative to advocate for restrictions on the widespread adoption of AI to prevent societal upheaval.”
In conclusion, Bishop Ajakaye called for collective action to address the challenges posed by AI, stressing the need for thoughtful regulation to safeguard the welfare of humanity.
