Archbishop Onuoha: Nigeria’s Transformation From Motherland To Murder Land....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Most Rev. David Onuoha, Anglican Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, expressed deep concern that present-day Nigeria resembles more a land of violence than one of nurturing and growth.

In his comprehensive 117-page presidential address during the inaugural session of the 11th synod of the Diocese of Okigwe South, convened at Emmanuel Church in Ehume, Obowo local council area of Imo State, Onuoha conveyed his distressing observation.

He remarked, “The Nigeria we see today appears to be consumed by a culture of violence, rather than one that fosters a nurturing environment. This reality stems from the accumulation of past transgressions, neglect, and misguided decisions.”

Onuoha lamented the persistent quest for a functional Nigeria, one that inspires optimism, ensures security, and fosters prosperity since attaining independence over six decades ago. However, he noted the enduring prevalence of corruption as a pervasive and entrenched issue across all levels of society.

Drawing attention to recent events such as the alarming fraud during the 2023 elections, controversies surrounding governmental contract awards, and the audacity of certain public officials in flouting accountability, Onuoha underscored the urgent need to confront corruption head-on.

He emphasized, “The societal woes we face today—poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and hunger—are direct consequences of the rampant corruption that has plagued our nation for years. Until we decisively tackle this multifaceted challenge, the situation will only deteriorate further.”

Onuoha also revisited his previous proposal that the relatives of convicted individuals involved in corrupt practices should bear some responsibility, stressing the necessity for holistic accountability measures.

Moreover, he contended that Nigeria’s progress in nation-building has been stymied due to the absence of a unifying core value system across its diverse ethnic groups. Proposing restructuring along the lines of the six geopolitical zones, he envisioned a return to the era of regional governance, wherein healthy competition spurred growth and development.

“While maintaining Nigeria’s unity as non-negotiable, embracing the vision of our founding fathers through the promotion of regional autonomy can rejuvenate our national spirit,” Onuoha asserted. “It is imperative to alleviate this stagnation and introduce fresh perspectives to our nation.
