Jorge Messi, father of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68, according to multiple Argentine media reports.

Jorge had reportedly been battling health complications for some time and was receiving medical treatment in Rosario, Argentina, where he died.

News of his death comes weeks after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s World Cup match against Algeria in June. The Inter Miami forward broke down after scoring and later explained that his emotions were unrelated to football.

“Why was I crying? It had absolutely nothing to do with football. I have had a few difficult days,” Messi said at the time.

The comments sparked speculation about Jorge Messi’s health, although details of his condition remained private.

The Messi family later issued a statement confirming that Jorge was experiencing health problems and appealed for privacy.

“The Messi family wishes to inform you that Jorge Messi is currently dealing with health problems. He is currently under medical supervision and is recovering well,” the statement said.

The family also expressed concern over reports and speculation surrounding Jorge’s condition, asking the public and media to respect the family’s privacy.

Lionel Messi subsequently missed the MLS All-Star Game at the end of July, with reports suggesting he had travelled to Argentina to be with his father. He returned to action for Inter Miami several days later.

The Argentine club described Jorge as a devoted supporter and a key figure in Lionel Messi’s journey from Rosario to the highest levels of world football.

“Newell’s Old Boys Athletic Club deeply mourns Jorge Messi, who passed away in Rosario at the age of 68, with immense sadness,” the club stated.

Newell’s also described Jorge as “the pillar of the greatest player in history,” praising the vision, discipline and care with which he supported his son.

“His continuous companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were crucial in supporting Messi every step of the way, from his beginnings in Malvinas to reaching the highest honours in world football,” the club added.

“Thank you for teaching him to love these colours.”

The club extended its condolences to Jorge’s wife, Celia Cuccittini, as well as Lionel, Rodrygo, Matías and María Sol, along with other family members and close friends.
