Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, has criticized calls for a military coup in response to the protests over fuel subsidy removal. He emphasized that there is no place for military intervention in Nigeria’s political landscape, asserting that democracy is firmly established in the country.

In a statement made to journalists on Wednesday, Al-Mustapha, who was a 2023 presidential candidate for the Action Alliance (AA), expressed his opposition to both Nigeria’s parliamentary and presidential systems. Al-Mustapha remarked, “I advise those advocating for a coup to instead focus on enhancing military professionalism and ensuring military subordination to democratic principles.”

He elaborated, “In past debates, I have criticized the presidential system in Nigeria. Unlike the United Kingdom and the United States—where the parliamentary and presidential systems respectively align with their historical and cultural contexts—Nigeria has merely adopted and altered these systems without regard to our own cultural and historical realities. This mismatch leads to inefficiencies and dissatisfaction.”

He continued, “Some politicians suggested I should keep my views private and allow the current system to persist. However, I cannot support a system that feels inherently flawed. For instance, while countries like the US have laws protecting immigrants, in Nigeria, everyone is a citizen with no such distinctions. We need to develop a form of democracy that is uniquely suited to our own needs and circumstances, rather than perpetuating a system that does not align with our identity.
