In an interview with Vanguard, Abbo, a prominent figure in the coalition, described the ADC alignment as a strategic “marriage of convenience,” driven by national, regional, and personal interests.
“Politics is inherently about interests — personal, regional, and national. While these interests may differ, the goal is to harness them for a common purpose,” he stated.
Abbo emphasized that the coalition would operate under democratic principles in choosing candidates for all elective offices, including the presidency.
“This is an interim leadership arrangement. Once congresses are held, a national convention will elect the party’s executives, and all candidates will be selected democratically,” he explained.
Responding to skepticism over the ideological diversity within the coalition, Abbo brushed aside the concerns, drawing parallels with the formation of the APC in 2013.
“History has shown us that alliances formed out of necessity can thrive. The APC itself was formed from the merger of PDP defectors, ANPP, CPC, and ACN members. It was a marriage of political convenience that worked and led them to power,” he said.
Abbo concluded by reinforcing that such strategic alliances are not only necessary but essential for political progress.
“Yes, this is a marriage of convenience. But all successful marriages must be convenient. What matters is that this coalition is rooted in the national interest,” he added.
